Symbiotic Material Dress
Mitsubishi Chemical’s Science & Innovation Center features a unique avenue of zelkova trees that was once utilized in the research of slow-release fertilizers. Although an iconic symbol of the center, some of the trees were regretfully cut down during a recent renovation. This monument was developed to repurpose and revitalize that wood. The installation features three zelkova trunks interwoven with distinct Mitsubishi Chemical materials, showcasing their unique properties in a state of symbiosis.
The three materials utilized are: acrylic residue, which exhibits a beautiful texture from the final stage of the recycling process; Tefabloc, a 3D-printable material that softly envelops the forms; and a structural color film that generates diverse visual effects inspired by nature. This combination allows the company's multifaceted endeavors to be experienced through a new lens. Additionally, the surface patterns were designed by simulating the movement of sunlight and rainwater at the specific site, reflecting how plants adapt and grow in diverse environments. Because the installation doubles as an outdoor weatherability test, researchers can monitor the condition of the materials daily. Ahead of the monument's installation, an art workshop was conducted for the researchers. This project served as an opportunity for them to explore new potentials and creative viewpoints regarding their own company’s materials through the medium of art.
三菱ケミカルの研究所(Science & Innovation Center)には遅効性肥料の研究にも活用された、個性豊かな欅並木がある。研究所の象徴でありながら、リニューアルに伴い惜しまれつつ一部伐採された欅を生まれ変わらせるモニュメントを制作。3本の欅の木には、三菱ケミカルの異なる素材が、それぞれの特徴を生かしながら共生するように纏っている。
アクリルをリサイクルする過程で最後に残る美しい表情を持った残渣、3Dプリント素材として対象を柔らかく包み込むテファブロック、そして自然から着想を得て多彩な見え方を生み出す構造色フィルム。これらの組み合わせにより、同社の多様な取り組みを新たな視点から感じ取れるよう設計した。また、表面の模様は、植物が様々な環境下で成長するプロセスに着目し、設置場所における日光や雨の流れをシミュレーションして導き出している。三つの素材は屋外での耐候性の実験も兼ねており、研究者は毎日状態を確認することができる。さらに、モニュメントの設置に先立ち、研究員を対象としたアート制作のワークショップも開催。これは、アートという媒介を通して、自社の素材が持つ新たな可能性や視点に気づいてもらう試みを実施した。
