Origin | Ultrasuede® 25-26 Automotive Collection
Held at the Daikanyama T-Site Garden Gallery in Tokyo and later traveling to Nagoya, this exhibition was curated primarily for the automotive, fashion, and apparel industries to explore the origins of Ultrasuede®, an advanced, eco-conscious, durable, and easy-care plant-based artificial leather versatile for the modern era. Centered around the theme "ORIGIN," the spatial design sought to foster a deep emotional connection and showcase how nature's tranquility can inspire both future mobility spaces and innovative fashion design by illuminating the material's roots in Lake Biwa—Japan’s largest lake, which is blessed with abundant water and majestic landscapes. Hypothesizing that this rich natural environment profoundly influenced the original development of Ultrasuede®, we conducted extensive fieldwork on-site to trace and internalize the sensory experiences of its creators, subsequently unveiling two concept colors: Haei (Wave Shadows), capturing light dancing on the lake's surface, and Shinonome (Daybreak), reflecting the pre-dawn sky's soft hues.
By seamlessly integrating these fabrics across the ceiling, flooring, and custom fixtures that echoed the lake's surface and atmospheric presence, we enveloped the space in the deep, soft essence of the lake. Within the exhibition, we curated a tactile display combining textile samples inspired by the water and sandy shores, juxtaposed with driftwood and raw materials harvested during our fieldwork, deliberately crafting a highly physical, tangible spatial experience that appeals directly to the human senses in an era where digital tools and AI offer instant but flat information.
To guide visitors from these natural inspirations to the material's core functionalities—such as its combination of a soft touch with high durability and a non-fraying edge for exceptional workability—we demonstrated this technical precision through a large-scale installation using finely slit, cascading strips of the material. Swaying gently in the ambient breeze, the delicate shadows created an immersive environment that evoked the view of a shimmering water surface from the lakebed, allowing visitors to physically feel the material's "Origin."
Furthermore, sustainability was embedded directly into the exhibition design beyond the partially plant-based nature of Ultrasuede® itself; we engineered a highly mobile, modular, and flat-pack installation where all fabrics could be rolled and all fixtures utilized traditional Japanese Kumiki (interlocking wood joinery), allowing the entire setup to be fully dismantled, compactly stored, and transported with minimized volume, which significantly reduced logistical costs and the touring exhibition's carbon footprint.
東京の代官山T-SITE GARDEN GALLERYにて、部分植物由来原料を用いた先進的な人工皮革「Ultrasuede®（ウルトラスエード）」の起源に迫る展示を開催した。本展は、現代において環境対応・高耐久・イージーケアを兼ね備え、サステナブルな素材として多用途に活躍するUltrasuede®のルーツやストーリーに焦点を当て、来場者にその産地や歴史、誕生の背景を伝えることで、素材への愛着や共感を育む契機となるよう企画された。
本コレクションのテーマは「ORIGIN（起源）」。モチーフに据えたのは、ブランド発祥に縁の深い、豊かな水と雄大な自然を湛える日本最大の湖・琵琶湖である。その大自然が当時の開発に深く関わったのではないかと考え、私たちは創作者たちの感覚をトレースすべく現地でのフィールドワークを重ねた。そこから着想を得て、湖面の光の深みを表現した「波翳（はえい）」と、夜明け前の空の柔らかな色を捉えた「東雲（しののめ）」の2つのコンセプトカラーを披露。この2色の生地を天井、床、そして什器の天面にまでシームレスに使用することで、琵琶湖が持つ深く柔らかな空気感で空間全体を包み込んだ。会場では、水面を表現した新色の什器とともに、フィールドワークで採取した流木や原材料を展示。デジタルやAIによって瞬時にフラットな情報を得られる現代だからこそ、五感に直接訴えかけるリアルな質感と世界観を体験できる、きわめて身体的な空間を作り上げた。
展示構成は、雄大な自然から得たインスピレーションの源泉を辿りながら、最終的に素材の本質的な機能へと行き着く設計とした。Ultrasuede®は、上質な手触りと高い耐久性、そして裁断してもほつれない優れた加工性を兼ね備えている。この圧倒的な技術力と質感を伝えるため、会場には同素材を細かくスリット状にして連ねた大型インスタレーションを設置。微風に揺れ動く繊細な陰影は、あたかも湖底から湖面を見上げるような没入感をもたらし、来場者はその幻想的な空間を通じて、素材の根底に流れる「ORIGIN」の息吹を肌で体感することができる。
さらに、素材自体の環境配慮に留まらず、空間デザインそのものにもサステナビリティを徹底させた。東京での展示終了後には名古屋への巡回が行われたが、すべての生地は巻いて保管でき、展示台は日本古来の「組み木」のような様式で工具を使わず完全に分解・コンパクト収納できる仕組みへと共通化（フラットパック化）した。これにより、最小限のボリュームで無駄のない移動が可能となり、輸送コストの大幅な削減と、巡回に伴う二酸化炭素排出量の低減を同時に実現している。
